Hong Kong Tourney 2002

The Special Administrative Region is ready for the 2002 Hong Kong Pan-Asian Ultimate Tournament.

As a special administrative region there are special rules so please note them mentioned below. You'll find details on the registration and fees, dinner Saturday, the Costume Gala, fields and schedule-related issues, smack and rosters, weather and other pointers.

First... Getting in from the airport: Getting to Central or Kowloon from the airport is easy. Take the Airport Express train which is at departure level at the airport. It costs HK$100 one-way. There are money changers as you walk out from customs. You can buy the ticket at the airport or at the station in Central or Kowloon. In 23 minutes you'll be in the heart of Hong Kong. If you're a group of 5 it might be more economical (if you're going to the same destination) to take a taxi which costs about HK$350.

Registration Fees and Party Registration fees are HK$400 for players. For non-player cheerleaders who want to get dinner Saturday night and lunches on the field, it's HK$200. Discs and t-shirts can be purchased separately.

SPECIAL NOTE: Due to strange special Hong Kong field rules, registering at the fields will be slightly awkward because for special reasons there no money can change hands on the fields. If it has to happen, try to be subtle. It would be best if you could register Friday night whenever possible. Captains, if you could collect for your team that would be ideal. Otherwise we'll just have to be discreet or do the transaction at the dinner.

The Registration Party starts from 7 pm to midnight at LA Cafe (Our Sponsor). Happy Hour prices all-night long. The address is: G/F Far East Financial Bldg., 16 Harcourt Road, Admiralty

The link below has a map of the area:

If you are taking the MTR from the Hotel, get out at Admiralty exit A and take left. It's the next building over (the Far East Financial Bldg.) and it's on the corner. If you're taking a taxi it might be best to tell them admiralty center, or just print out the map and point and shoot.

Dinner Dinner will be at East End Brewery/In Side Out (also our sponsor). It will be served from 6:30-8:30 with 5 kegs of beer to get through. We'll come over right after the games. There are showers at the fields, and it's not far from the Charterhouse if you're staying there. After 8:30 we lose our exclusivity and the food dries up.

Address: G/F, Sunning Plaza, 10 Hysan Road, Causeway Bay It's sandwiched between two buildings in the middle of the block. Open air seating.

Here's the map where it is: Party link

Costume Gala The Halloween Costume Gala will start some time after 10 or 10:30 at a venue TBA. We're expecting a lot.

FIELDS, FOOD, SEEDINGS, SCHEDULE, RULES Directions to the fields will be handed out at the registration party. A general map is on the web site. They are in the Happy Valley Race Track and close to the hotel. Taxi drivers will know where that is. Tell them the Hong Kong Football Club. We'll try to provide something more detailed at registration.

We'll use UPA 10 edition with the pick continuation rule (that's what we did in Singapore right?)

There are 11 teams (Freakshow, Renegade Province, Junk, Shanghai, Bangkok, Beijing, Uber, Star Fairies, Manila Vice, Seoul, and the Hukkas) and we're sorting out the schedule and seedings based on the following smack. Games will start at 8:30 and go until 6:00. That information will follow tomorrow or Thursday.

There will be bananas and oranges in the a.m. and as part of your registration fee you'll also get sandwichs, salads and muffins for lunch. We'll provide water (Bring a waterbottle because it's always a good idea.) There is also a kiosk in the fields where you can buy sports drinks and other stuff right by the showers. There are showers.

IMPORTANT SPECIAL NOTE: Due to field unavailability, we're going to be playing on four skinny fields with a shared sideline. We tried to get more and bigger fields but, alas, not this year. At least we have them. The finals will be played on a big field.

WEATHER To all our those who enjoy the equatorial heat in Southeast Asia, bring long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to the fields in case if you are prone to getting cold. The weather will be beautiful but the dinner will be outside and it could be cool for some. Jangan masuk angin.

SMACK, ROSTERS Anonymous smack gathered. Can you guess which team is which?

"We'll probably play fairly tough against Sing and Taiwan and Hong Kong. We're in the mix."

"Us against shanghai is a close call with the favor going to shanghai for having a more solid lineup of men and height... but our women are better than theirs."

"Our players have a farther range to step up than anyone else."

"It's all about who wins the party."

"Met some new college players going to shanghai including women. It seems like everyone is getting new college players but us."

"We will have more players (and won't tire out as easily), but we will have weaker players."

"I suspect we are better than Bangkok."

"Our team vs. sing tourney? We have more depth, so that could mean our top players are fresher than Sunday. If we are not competitive, we'll just focus on having fun on Sunday."

"We lost some key players so it all depends on who will step it up."

"We are lower third for sure."

"Beijing aren't really the Beijing we know and love. They'll play pretty hot this tourney."

(Missing rosters -- Seoul (we know they have five men and six women, and a couple international pick ups) and the silent Renegades.

Manila
It gives me great pleasure to introduce the largest(?) out-of-town team to be represented at your tournament, and the biggest group of Vicers ever to travel together to an Ultimate competition abroad... (the ladies are denoted by "Ms."). And we ain't just a bunch of beer-swillin' expats...over one-third of the team is Filipino by nationality or origin.

BALI

Update from Seminyak: Unfortunately, the Hong Kong Crew split up - -
Natalie, Warren and Kelly beefed up Beijing.
Hudson hopped on the International Allstars.
    Kate jumped to Jakarta.

With three of the Hong Kong contingent on board Beijing gelled smoothly into day two and comfortably reached the semis where they nearly pulled off the upset of the tournament over Taiwan but lost in a hot squeeker 5-4.

Natalie took the Best Female Award (well done Nat!) and Beijing gave Jakarta a serious run for its money in taking the party....
