Yummy White Sets New HK Ultimate Record

Just when you thought Autumnal League couldn't get any more remarkable, the Yummy White Team set a new record for HK Ultimate. By drawing with Kristin's Blue Smurfs, they became the quickest team ever to notch up 1 Win, 1 Loss, 1 Tie and 1 Cancelled Due To Typhoon in the league tables. Taking just 4 weeks to achieve this breath-taking feat, they beat the previous record of 8 rounds set by Zen Red back in the Fall League of 2004. In the excitement of this historic moment, it was almost easy to forget that a second game of Ultimate was going on over on Field 2, so we'd better cover that first.

In that game, Black Rain were also eyeing off the magical 1-1-1-1 combination, having won their first game against White, before losing to Blue in advance of last week's Typhoon. And at 2-2, they looked quietly confident that a Tie was definitely on the cards. Unfortunately for Black Rain, Red(iculous) were aware that their ancestral team's record was under threat, and were also in desperate need of a win themselves. In the end, Red(iculous) just wanted the Win more than Black wanted the Tie, and it started to show on the scoreboard. Notwithstanding Black Rain's efforts to keep the score at 2-2, Red(iculous) insisted on scoring point after point, taking the half 8-2. Black Rain regrouped at the break and came out strongly, scoring the first 2 points and raising the faint hope that an 8-8 result might be on the cards. But, Red(iculous) were not to be denied, and they skipped away to a 15-4 victory. To make matters worse for Black Rain, their inspirational leader Grant Franke copped an elbow to the head for the third time in as many weeks. At this stage, no player from the Red team will be asked to front the tribunal as a result of the action. However, it is understood that the other captains got together after the game and reached a gentleman's agreement to stop beating up on Grant during future rounds of League.

As previously mentioned though, the real story of the night was White's stunning clean sweep of all Potential Results, which was due in part to a magnificently competitive display of Ultimate put on by both teams. It was close all night, and the result could have gone either way. Full credit to white though. Having tied the score at 11 each, they even went so far as to turnover the disc to Blue and give them delusions of scoring one last point, knowing full-well that the lights were about to go out and leave the Smurfs stranded half-way up the field.

In a post match interview with your reporter, White Captain Bill Byrne said that he was "very honored to establish themselves as the record breaking team", having initially doubted their capacity to lose or tie games of Ultimate, despite being in no doubt that they could win as many as they liked. Momentarily confusing myself with Katie Couric, I went on to ask Bill if there was anybody he SPECIFICALLY wanted to thank, to which Billy commented: "For the loss, I'd like to thank myself and Michael Hsu for dropping a pull in the end zone. For the win, I'd like to thank Michael Hsu for not showing up. And, for the tie, I'd like to thank Michael Hsu for showing up half way through the game." When asked if Michael Hsu should also be credited for the typhoon, Billy just smiled and said: "No, not at all. That was just the Almighty showing us all that it was God's will for us to break that record".
